During the recent unpleasantness, my viewing habits have ranged far and wide, including of course the world of stand-up comedy (of which I am an occasional practitioner). In this process, I have become struck by a new breed of comedian whose schtick mainly consists of outing themselves as gay at multi-decibel level, as if their sibilance, immaculate grooming and tailored suits didn’t already dull neon signs in comparison.
This phenomenon has followed closely on the wave of female comedians shit-canning men and celebrating women’s genitalia as a clear sign of their moral superiority and young comedians of both genders sucking up applause for their oh-so-out there use of Anglo-Saxon four-letter vernacular.
Finding someone who is actually funny who doesn’t need to resort to these el cheapo race to the bottom (nudge, nudge, wink, wink) tropes is becoming harder (nudge, nudge, wink, wink) by the minute.
Do this army of wannabes actually make a living at their craft, as distinct from spending money in the hope of ‘discovery’ or existential coolth? And how many are coasting on the idea that audiences are thinking ‘this is a comedy show, so the acts have to be funny, right, so I should laugh for fear of looking like a goose when the camera pans to me’.
Here are some honorable exceptions for your delectation and to support the idea that all is not lost.
